A 3000W inverter does not have one fixed battery requirement. First match the battery bank to the inverter’s DC input voltage. Then size stored energy for the appliances and backup hours you need. A 12V, 24V and 48V bank can store the same energy with different series and parallel arrangements.
This guide separates battery count from runtime, with worked estimates for a Nigerian home. Check the exact inverter and battery manuals before choosing a system.
How many batteries for a 3000W inverter?
When using individual 12V batteries approved for series connection, a 12V inverter needs one battery per string, a 24V inverter needs two in series, and a 48V inverter needs four in series. That is the voltage requirement only. More parallel capacity may be needed for current and runtime.
A purpose-built 24V or 48V-class lithium battery may provide the required bank voltage in one enclosure. Do not connect integrated lithium batteries in series unless their manufacturer explicitly permits it. Do not mix battery types, capacities or unsuitable ages.
| Inverter DC input | 12V units per series string | Estimated current at 3000W AC |
|---|---|---|
| 12V | 1 | 278A |
| 24V | 2 | 139A |
| 48V | 4 | 69A |
Current estimate: 3000W ÷ 0.90 inverter efficiency ÷ nominal battery voltage. Current rises as battery voltage falls. Check continuous and surge discharge ratings, BMS limits, cable sizing and protection. This table is not a wiring specification.
Worked example: 3000W for two hours
Assume 12V 200Ah lead-acid batteries, 50% usable depth of discharge and 90% inverter efficiency. The energy requirement is 3000W × 2h ÷ (0.50 × 0.90) = 13.33kWh nominal battery storage.
| System | Illustrative arrangement | Total 12V 200Ah batteries | Bank energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12V | 6 parallel strings of 1 | 6 | 14.4kWh |
| 24V | 3 parallel strings of 2 in series | 6 | 14.4kWh |
| 48V | 2 parallel strings of 4 in series | 8 | 19.2kWh |
Counts are rounded up to complete series strings. They demonstrate the arithmetic, not an installation recommendation. Lead-acid capacity falls at higher discharge rates; ageing, temperature, voltage cut-off, inverter idle consumption and wiring losses can shorten runtime. An installer must check the permitted parallel configuration and rated discharge performance.
How long will the battery bank run?
Estimated runtime (hours) = nominal battery kWh × usable discharge fraction × inverter efficiency ÷ actual load kW. Use actual simultaneous load, not the inverter’s maximum rating.
| Illustrative bank | 500W load | 1000W load | 3000W load |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12V 400Ah (4.8kWh) | 4.32h | 2.16h | 0.72h |
| 24V 200Ah (4.8kWh) | 4.32h | 2.16h | 0.72h |
| 48V 100Ah (4.8kWh) | 4.32h | 2.16h | 0.72h |
| 5.12kWh lithium bank | 8.29h | 4.15h | 1.38h |
Planning estimates only, with no solar or grid charging during use. The first three rows assume lead-acid at 50% depth of discharge; the lithium row assumes 90%. All rows assume 90% inverter efficiency. These figures are not measured product results or a promise that any particular battery can deliver 3000W. Verify the pack’s voltage, continuous power and BMS limits.
Why amp-hours alone can be misleading
A 12V 200Ah battery stores 2.4kWh nominally; a 24V 200Ah bank stores 4.8kWh; a 48V 200Ah bank stores 9.6kWh. Compare kWh at the correct voltage. Series connections increase voltage while string Ah stays the same; approved parallel strings increase Ah.
What can a 3000W inverter run?
Lights, fans, a router, a television or a refrigerator may form an essential-load circuit, provided their combined running power and starting surges remain within the system limits. Read appliance nameplates or measure consumption. Pumps, compressors and air conditioners can require much higher power when starting.
A kettle or microwave can use much of the available power on its own. Avoid assuming that every appliance listed can operate together. The inverter’s surge duration, ambient-temperature rating and the battery’s discharge capability all matter.
Plan battery backup for a home in Nigeria
Start with the circuits you want during an outage in Lagos, Abuja or elsewhere in Nigeria. Write down their measured watts, hours of use and starting loads. A 500W essential load for four hours needs 2kWh delivered to the appliances; the nominal battery bank must be larger to allow for usable discharge and losses.
Allow time and charging capacity to restore the battery before the next outage. Solar yield varies with roof space, shading and weather. Grid or generator charging needs a compatible inverter and a design checked by the installer.
- SNA 3-6K inverter range: check the specific model’s battery voltage, output and charging limits.
- PGEM lithium battery and PGEM PRO battery: compare low-voltage storage options after checking inverter and BMS compatibility.
- All solar battery options: compare nominal energy, usable energy and discharge power.

3000W inverter battery FAQ
Can one 200Ah battery run a 3000W inverter?
It depends on voltage and discharge limits. At 12V and 90% inverter efficiency, a 3000W load draws about 278A, which many batteries cannot supply continuously. Ah describes capacity, not maximum current. Check voltage, BMS and continuous discharge ratings first.
Is 48V always better than 12V or 24V?
At the same power, a 48V system draws less nominal DC current. That does not make it compatible with a 12V or 24V inverter. Choose the battery bank voltage specified by the inverter and have the whole system designed accordingly.
Can I use a lithium battery with a 3000W inverter?
Yes, if the battery voltage, charge settings, discharge power, BMS communication and firmware are approved for that inverter. A capacity match alone does not establish compatibility.
Does a 3000W inverter always consume 3000W?
No. The 3000W label is an output power rating. Battery draw depends on the actual connected load, conversion losses and inverter idle consumption. Smaller loads normally allow longer runtime.
What details are needed for a battery recommendation?
Send your location, inverter model and DC voltage, battery model if installed, appliance load list, desired backup hours and available solar or generator supply. These details allow the Nigeria team to review the system.
